Q - Chinese herbs are
they good for everyone?
A - Oriental Medicine is based on the foundation of the philosophy that there is never a single answer to a problem. With all of the Hollywood buzz that herbal medicine is receiving lately, there is a misconception that if an herb cures one problem, then it must work for everyone with the same problem! THIS IS NOT TRUE! A person's underlying condition must be taken into consideration for treatment of his or her problem. A single herb is almost never prescribed for any patient. Formulas must always be delicately combined to protect the patient against possible unwanted effects of the herbs he or she needs to take. This way, higher results are achieved. Q - Are all herbs vegetable in origin? A - A majority of Chinese herbs originate from some source of vegetable such as: leaves, flowers, seeds, twigs, stems, roots, and barks. However, most Chinese herbal practitioners use ingredients from vegetable, animal, and mineral kingdoms. Q - Where do the herbs come from? A - The Chinese materia medica contains herbs from all over the world. The reasoning behind the title Chinese herbs is because of the prescription according to Chinese medical theory. Q - How are Chinese herbs taken? A - Most often herbal medicine is taken by a form of soup or tea, also known as decoction, and drunk 2-3 times a day. There are herbal pills, capsules, tinctures, and powdered or granulated extracts that can be taken as well. Q - What's the advantage of drinking Chinese herbs in decoction? A - This method seems to be more potent and allows maximum flexibility. Accurate measurements and changes are more manageable through this type of administration. Q - Why do decoctions taste so bad? A - The strongest medicines are found from roots and barks, which are what Chinese medicines are composed of. Although the taste may not be favorable, there are suggestions that may help with administration. Q - What if I am taking prescription drugs? A - It is very important to consult with your practitioner of which drugs you are taking. This may hinder the design of your herbal formula. It is also imperative that you continue taking any drugs your physician has prescribed. |
